“Managing Projects in Telecommunications Services”

Runtime: 7 minutes

Mostafa Sherif discusses project management theory and provides practical guidance for managing telecommunications projects effectively. Topics include the technology life cycle, project organization, human resources, and vendor management. A senior technical specialist for AT&T in Basking Ridge, N.J., Sherif is a certified project manager and an internationally recognized expert on standards for packetized voice and digital signal processing in transmission equipment.

 

“Ethernet in the First Mile: Access for Everyone”

(March 2006, IEEE Press/Standards Information Network)

Runtime: 10 minutes–plus

Wael Diab and Howard Frazier explain the principles behind IEEE Std. 802.3ah, known as Ethernet in the First Mile, which adds specifications for broadband subscriber access networks. The standard provides for speeds of 2 million to 1 billion bits per second and physical layers of twisted-pair copper cabling and single-mode optical fiber. The two writers also discuss how the standard affects end users. Diab is director of marketing for the networking infrastructure group at Broadcom Corp., Irvine, Calif. Richard J. Thompson Jr. describes the development of quartz crystal technology, a World War II project second only to the Manhattan Project in its importance. Thompson is dean of mathematics and science at the College of Saint Rose, in Albany, N.Y.
